I'm finished with school. Finally.

Well, kinda finished. At least for a bit.

I have finished my last semester of my undergraduate engineering studies at GWU [1]. I came out of this spring semester with an butchered senior thesis project, but also with my second asic design. While my senior thesis was an fpga based SoC, doing encryption and communication; my asic is actually a microprocessor. It is a 8 bit CISC electric brain, using an acummulator based model. I have plans to take this to fabrication on the June MOSIS MEP run on AMI 0.5um process. Not only has this been implemented but simulated with a dsp system. My post fabrication verification plans including using an Fpga to emulate the block ram and handle the dac/adc parts.

The ASIC work is actually pretty exciting for me, since I don't do anything at all like this at my job. I'm really driving this myself with the support of a professor. I'm thinking about it as though I was working in the E d a industry, it's like free on the job style training. I even get to self pace my work since it's not for a course. I'll have the signoff for fab in late June, which will give me 2-3 months to have designed, implemented and tested the verification platform. One thing to keep in mind is that the processor was built using a RTL to GDSII flow, so it would not be difficult to implement the uP on an fpga too.

I have several busy evenings because of this project, but it will keep me sharp on my engineering skillset while I'm working an IT Support gig full time. I guess what it really is, in reality, is how much more free my brain is with the spectre of other coursework or senior design over my head.

It's a beautiful day. No more writing, time to play.

1. We all know that Proposition 8 passed in California. Why people are trying to fight a amendment in the courts is amusing, since the courts can't void a vote by the people to change the state constitution. The democratic process was followed, despite how people feel about the outcome, the courts are the wrong place to fight it. People should be looking towards a future voting cycle when the state constitution can be amended again.

2. Ted Stevens, the man who brought us the Tubes has lost his senate seat. What bothers me more, is that the convicted felon lost by only three thousand votes out of 315573 votes counted.

3. Most people have seen that Alberto Gonzalez and Richard Cheney have been indicted by a grand jury in southern Texas, for alledged prisoner abuse and corruption in a prison system. However, if this gets moved out of the state courts and into the federal court system, the defendents have an interesting twist to deal with.

While this is within the operating budget of CERN, the total cost of the device is expected to approach at least 6 billion USD, all of which is paid for by various nations and organizations. Given that we're moving towards a global depression (depending on who you read), what prospects do we have of such grandiose, multinational research projects in the coming decade if nation-states are primarily focusing towards sustaining themselves?

Its been a long while since I've updated this bloody thing.

1. I'm working at GWU full time, going to school part time. There is an interesting story to that. Changing your engineering major your second semester junior year is probably not the best thing to do. It will be a posting at some near point in time.

2. My senior thesis project is drawing to a close. The project, File Encryption and Transmission system, FETS for short, allows users to connect a black box to their computer and securely transmit files from one location to another location using the telephone network. Its an FPGA based project, which will warrant a couple postings highlighting what the project is, and how it was implemented.

3. Life has been crazy the past year; musical addictions and a myriad of things I had no idea I was going to be getting myself into. All will be revealed in time.

Rebirth & Ramadan

I've decided to take back my blog here, a rebirthing as you will. I'm doing this because I've decided to observe Ramadan this year, 2007, and possibly in the future as well; I wish to document my observance and observations.

This summer I picked up a pair of classic literature pieces: John Milton's Paradise Lost and The Koran. Since I'm writing of Ramadan, you can guess which I worked on more during summer (comments on Milton will be forthcoming).

Many non-Muslims may be familiar with the word Ramadan; their Muslim friends end up fasting for a lunar month, abstaining from food and drink during the day, only to eat their meals before sunrise, and after sunset. The fast acts as a deeply personal prayer to Allah. One could draw an analogy to the practice of Lent, where people give up something important to them for a period of time. This month is also accompanied by an attempt to live with more pure thoughts/deeds, as well as a time for greater study of the Koran.

I've never met a non-Muslim that has gone through Ramadan, from beginning to end.

Nor have I ever met a non-Muslim that has ever fasted during Ramadan in observance of this.

I am not a Muslim, but I want to make it through the whole month. Generally when people find out, I do not receive much of a response, much like how no one questions their Jewish friends for observing Roshanah this weekend. Few have asked me why, knowing that I am not a Muslim. Discipline is a nice thing to gain, as is knowledge and the experience of partaking in the month. However, when I tell people that I simply want to observe the month because I want to do so...people get puzzled looks. No college kid just gives up eating during the day. Mabye there is more to my desire to participate than I realize, but I am observing, and will not tolerate derision in my quest.

Anyhow, I woke up this morning at 05:15, and had a small meal of olives, water and cheese. Fajr was at 5:34, I'm not versed in prayer, so I read from the Koran instead. I started reading Abraham this morning. I didn't make it to Trader Joes last night, I need some juice and some fruit available in the morning.

Maghrib is around 7:20 tonight, and the GWU MSA is hosting an Iftar dinner tonight, like they will every Monday through Thursday at Mariam's Kitchen. I'll be there.

Roller coaster

Sometimes I use a roller coaster to describe my life. Earlier this summer, it was all fun and what not and now it feels like things are pettering out. There is still plenty of time to save summer though!!!

I'm going home august 11-16th. My parents foiled my plans of not having to go home again until christmas. They had planned to bring my siblings and themselves over to DC in August, but decided not to (they had enough traveling in China); so they offered a cunningly crafted invitation that left me no room to decline. Its not that I don't like my family, but I really like being independant here in DC. Here, I have to do stuff for myself; there, if I go to do something, someone else does it for me. Its rather frustrating. But, I'll be able to see the few people back there that I actually give a damn for (you know who you are, if you're reading this. Everyone else from 2004 can fall off the face of the earth).

I got myself a new machine built. Foxconn NF4K8MC-ERS(mATX mobo), Athlon 64 3000+ Venice, 1gig PC3200, 2x160GB WD Caviar SATA drives, NEC ND-3540A DVD burner, Winfast PX6600 GT THD Extreme edition video card; all packed into an Aspire X-Qpack case. Its a beauty, and runs Doom3 on high mode like nobodies business even anti aliased.

Work has more or less ground to a halt. Bar exams are done, as are summer classes at the law school. No more laptops, considerably lessened useage of the computer labs...life is sweet..but spending my day here is still about as exciting as looking at the horizon while stranded in the ocean. I really like doing stuff that'll challenge me. Thats the only downside to this job, little I do here challenges me. At ISIS, as least I had to fix mechanical systems, swapping out parts to make reciept printers and their POS brethern work, digging through technical manuals that were 15 years old to figure out if a NCR board is compatible with a certain style of tube gun assembly (The joys of dumb terminals, none of this putty emulation crap). I do lots of reading here, lotta technical and news stuff. I've been slowly working on Lolita, which is almost too good to read...I can only read so much of it each day.

But I"ve taken up DVD authoring at home. I've got tons of Divx/Xvid movies/episodes/cartoons that I want off my harddrive but in a readily playable format. I finally got chapters to work yesterday, I'm not too concerned about menus. I'm done with writing now.

Independance Day

Watching the fireworks over the national mall last night was amazing. CI is almost over, one more round to go. Class is done. Computer is ordered. MythBox should be coming along later this month. Biking should be getting into better gear soon [hurt my ankle 2 weeks ago]. Hurrah.

Summer begins tonight [or how Md has liqour sales]

Calc is done as of tonight. I've got my final at 6pm [not too psyched about it but i've got alot of time to study for it]. Last night me, Matt, Ben and Rich went to Bethesda, in Montgomery county, Md to buy booze. Why, you might ask. Montgomery county is liqour controlled, the county determines pricing across its bounds. One thing goes on sale, its on sale everywhere. The list has 18 pages of stuff....it makes it well worth the trip to Md. Hypnotiq, Alize Wild Passion[i don't remember if it was Wild or Red, the bottles and color are so strikingly similar], some more Jack [can never go wrong with the bourbon whiskeys], some Southern Comfort and Kahlua Especial. Similar runs will be made in the future, ultimately culminating in a serious liqour cabinet.

So CI has been going okay. I like to do the volunteer work with SEAS, and meet some of the incoming freshies. There are 80 incoming biomedical engineers in a class of 187 at SEAS. They don't know what they're getting themselves into. Soem people are doing rotc+biomedical engineering. Its insane, these people are taking 20-21 credit hours their first semester of college; I can only hope they make it but damn, I had enough trouble with my 15 [granted, I was partying a bit, but that is definitely what the first semester is for].

Colonial Inauguration

Colonial Inauguration begins tomorrow at GWU. Which means hundreds of prefrosh, people that aren't event freshman but are going to be, will be storming campus. Kids and parents who have no idea what they're getting into. Worst off are the kids that have their parents come along. Who wants to be bogged down with parents when you could be hanging out with new friends at your new school?

Anyhow, I'm well, well shielded from the insanity that is CI. Up in the Jacob Burns Law Library, I don't have to deal with any CI kids. They've got no reason to be here at the Law School. Alas, the better half of me, the part that tries to be community oriented at times, broke through and decided that I want to help out SEAS with CI activities. Mainly, course scheduling; I know just how much of a pain in the ass it is to do it by myself, this kids are diving into a swimming pool without learning how to swim! So...I'm venturing out into these untamed wilds to help these poor kids out. Mabye Its because I want to help make SEAS a better place. I really think the school needs more people that are interested in seeing it pick itself back up. We're engineers, we're not the biggest group on campus but I'd like to see it be a tighter group.

Anyhow, I saw Batman Begins with some friends last night at the midnight screening at the Loews Theatre in Georgetown. The movie is awesome, and Christian Bale is my favorite batman. Bale is a very talented actor that I believe hasn't gotten enough attention. After dropping all his muscle to become almost nothing for The Machinist, I don't think there is a more dedicated actor [I'm curious about is behavior onset though, Tom Hanks is notoriously dedicated to films he works on] around. The man is good and I think he's poised to become a symbol of an actor like Johny Depp is; versatile and willing to act a part because he likes the part, not because of blockbusting power.

I'm done!

Finished the first year of school at GWU. I've done 1/4 of the requirements for a BS in Electrical Engineering, and I'm damn proud of myself. Academics aside, I think I've learned alot about myself, dealing with people, living with random people, and how to avoid stressing out(ask me, i'll tell you how).

From being the token white guy at the first ISA meeting of the year to pledging (and joining) Theta Tau with some great guys to EBall 2005 to HavocLAN, meeting all sorts of great people and making some of the closest friends I've ever had; overall there isn't much i would've changed about how the year went. But in hindsight we can always wish to change things for the better, but if they could be changed that hindsight and insight wouldn't ever have occured[casuality be damned!].

Taking calc 3 [hurrah for multivariable!] this summer, working as a classroom computer assistant at the GWU Jacob Burns Law Library, which means i get to do lots of homework and fill printers with paper. Living at my Uncle's studio in DC over by the Eastern Market, its a really cool place. I'm mostly moved in now, just gotta set all my stuff up.

Therefore, I haven't posted here in a while.

I spent July 4-10 in Virginia and DC, hung out with Steve and Ben and had a blast with them. I've quit drinking since then, from what Steve described as a "gin and juice wreck." It was neat staying with steve, hes a pretty cool guy. I spent the second half of the week at George Washinton Universtiy, in Washington DC, where I'm going to college at. I did the orientation program, Colonial Inauguration, and got my classes registered.

I spent time this week in drivers ed; it was my graduation present from my parents, it was that or a new bicycle (I would've prefered the bike). It was interesting, primarily reading from a book, watching 80's instructional videos and talking to cute girls. There were a few neat people in the class, and plenty of not so neat people. I'm going to the DMV for my permit on tuesday morning, hopefully I'll have it done before work.

I met Zenster today, we had lunch at city bites. He was a really nice fella. I'm going to St. Louis this weekend with him and his girlfriend for Damitcon II. Its a get together of (now) old UT99 Assault players; some of them have moved on to UT2k4 Assault. It'll be cool to meet some people I've fragged and been fragged by; meeting people makes it more real, like after meeting Steve from Arrow and That Vela Fella from..well..Vela is everywhere.

i'm almost done with highschool..period. no more classes..no more work...except my video project for the school.

I graduate next week. I've waited the past 3 weeks for this....part of me wants to leave, to go live in dc and part of me wants to stay in oklahoma with everyone. but i'm going, there is no way in hell i'm staying at this point. part of me doesn't want college to be like highschool, with the same people.

Pros:

Early..sunday started too early.

Some bastard drag racing in the street woke me up at 4AM, that screwed me up for the day and set the tone for a healthy 7AM morning. I mowed the jungle yesterday. We got new blades for the edger, cuts sharper, deeper, and nicer now. I had to clean out my shoes afterwords, they easily had a handful of dirt, courtesy of the new blades on my edger. I can't stand dirt being in my shoes!! Its easily worse than having waterlogged shoes......Converse high tops are great shoes but they do have their failings.

My mom pissed me off yesterday. She took her bike and "rode down 19th" all the way to lake overholser and back. Through traffic. Through a city not used to bikers. To a lake known for drunken revellers at all hours of the day. On the night before when I wanted to ride my bike downtown to the Museum my parents forbade it. I don't get it; I've already mapped out a route to Nana's through the back rodes, shes got problems getting to my place and I only figure its a 40 minute bike ride.

My dad gave me a driving lesson last night at the shop. This isn't some bad, horribly satirized and dramatized cartoon driving; my dad is a very well trained driver, when he was a race car driver he was well respected off the track, for the amount of respect he paid to people while on it. Parts of it were just constant stop go stop go, nothing too fast. Hes really comfortable to drive with.

Boring!

Well, not quite as boring as it could've. I spent time working on this piece of damnation, tweaking templates and such. I spent a good deal of yesterday morning looking for and reading about Gmail and Invitations to it. I want a Gmail account, period, I really could use the space. Played a bit of tacops, I had a few rounds on Jam where I was rocking. Shameless self advertisment: Go b33f!!!

Went out last night to see the Oscar Nominated short films, 6 of them at least; at the OKC Museum of Art. I saw Die Rote Jacke(The Red Jacket), Harvie Crumpet, (A) Torsion, Nibbles, Squash and Perpetual Motion. Die Rote Jacke and (A)Torsion were both set in war torn Sarajevo, thats Bosnia for us westerners. The other 4 were comedies. Harvie Crumpet is a stop motion animation about a Pole who ends up in australia, his bad luck is ocassionally blessed with good luck. Nibbles was a really weird movie about a fishing trip but satirical about consumerism and consumption. Squash was set in a squash court, the entire time; about 2 business men fighting out their differences. Perpetual motion is about cats and jelly.

Never seemed so far away.

I also never felt senioritis quite like yesterday. I ditched half my classes, 3rd and 4th hour. I calculus I don't have to do any work but I'm supposed to be in the classroom i guess. I think only literature and government class (out of 8) are the only classes I'm still doing work in. Its really weird, i've never quite felt it this easy at the end of the year.

Anyhow, I ditched class so I could go find my gal, and I did. I'm falling for her pretty fast...I don't know if she is for me. I usually try to pick out 5 traits that I like before I'll go out with a girl, and I've got my five for her. Her happy-go-lucky attitude, intelligence, generous, athletic and she can make me smile. I'm gonna ask her out real soon.

Yesterday evening I didn't work, I really didn't care to. I'm tired of working from 3:40-5:00. Half doing projects and being peoples assistants really grates on me after a while. I figure i'll work next week afterschool (I need the money) and I'm starting full time the 2nd week of june so that will be better.

The china committee stuff is really interesting. I can't talk about the people interviewed for the program, but I can say we've got lots of bright talent coming up and its going to be difficult to decide whos in the program. Its a really special thing, to go on the exchange; I only wish the best for the people in the program. I won't be able to see the china kids in OKC, but I'll try to visit them when they are in DC.

I spent yesterday playing Docter Photoshop to Cran's Mia. She looks so cute with the coke bottle...and the absolut bottle. Thankyou tripkin for the idea, and cran for your psuedo blessings.

Not like this is going to be a charter for my blog or anything, just a little dity of why I'm doing this.

This isn't the first time I've tried this. I tried a blog on my first website 6 years ago. I had tried to keep a slashdot journal. I had a blog on blogspot at one point in time. Now, I've got this one. Unlike the others, I plan on keeping this one.

I want this one to document the end of my highschool life, my summer, the transition from being a kid in oklahoma to being a college student in DC. I just want a place to publish my thoughts. Mabye even my love life. Possibly even the work i'll be doing (but that could get rather repetitive this summer).
